Do you take your clothes off for Reiki?

Answered by Vanessa Chugani · Updated August 2026

No. You stay fully clothed for a Reiki session. Vanessa works with her hands resting lightly on or hovering just above your body, over your clothes. Wear something comfortable you can lie down in. The same applies to pregnancy Reiki. Nothing is removed at any point.

No, you don't. That assumption comes up more often than you'd guess, maybe because Reiki gets grouped with spa treatments in people's minds. It isn't one, and clothing was never really part of it. Here's what an actual session looks like.

What actually happens

You keep your clothes on for the whole session. There's no oil, no massage table sheets, no undressing behind a screen first. A session usually opens with a short conversation about why you're there and what you're hoping for, then moves into the lying-down part. You lie on a table, or a mat if that's more comfortable, and Vanessa places her hands lightly on or just above a series of points on your body: head, shoulders, torso, legs, feet. Nothing is pressed, rubbed, or manipulated. If you'd rather she not touch you at all, say so beforehand and she'll hold her hands just above you instead. If the room feels cool, ask for a light blanket over your clothes. If you've had a massage before, expect something much stiller than that.

What to wear

Whatever you'd wear to lie on the floor comfortably for a while: leggings, loose trousers, a soft t-shirt. In Canggu's climate, something lighter works just as well, this isn't a formal setting. Skip anything tight at the waist, and skip a lot of metal, zippers and belt buckles under someone's hand aren't pleasant for either of you. Shoes come off. That's the whole list. You don't need to shower first, remove makeup, or do anything else to get ready. Glasses and jewelry are fine to leave on if they're not in the way. The room is private: it's just you and Vanessa, nobody else in the space.

If it's a distance session

Then the clothing question doesn't come up at all, because there's no touch and you're not in the same room. A distance session is EUR 138, against EUR 188 for an in-person session in Canggu. The three-session package (EUR 388) and five-session package (EUR 588) work either way, so if you start in person and switch to distance later for convenience, nothing about how you book changes. If a session with no physical presence in the room sounds like it shouldn't work, that's a fair thing to be skeptical about. Read what distance healing actually is before you decide either way.

What this isn't

If what you actually want is bodywork, someone working on sore muscles with oil and real pressure, taking your clothes off wouldn't get you there anyway, because that's not what happens in a Reiki session. It's rest and support, not a treatment for any physical condition, and not a substitute for medical care. If lying still with someone's hands nearby, even lightly, over your clothes, sounds uncomfortable rather than restful, this probably isn't the right fit for you, and that's fine to say upfront. For the longer version of the bodywork comparison, see Reiki compared with massage. Pregnancy Reiki works the same way: fully clothed, adapted per trimester. Details are on the Pregnancy Reiki page.

Will you actually touch me during the session?

Lightly, over your clothes, yes, unless you'd rather she didn't. Say so before you start and she'll hold her hands just above you the whole time instead, no explanation needed. Either way nothing is pressed, rubbed, or worked on. It's a much stiller kind of contact than most bodywork.

Is it different for a pregnancy session?

The clothing part is the same: you stay dressed the whole time. Pregnancy Reiki is adapted per trimester, but that's about comfort and approach, not about what you wear. If you're unsure what's adjusted for your stage, ask when you book, it's a normal question.

Do I need to take off my shoes or jewelry?

Shoes come off, that's standard. Jewelry and glasses can stay on if they're not in your way lying down. There's no undressing at any point, no removing rings or watches, nothing beyond getting comfortable in whatever you arrived in, and no outfit to plan around it.
