Is Reiki safe during pregnancy?
Answered by Vanessa Chugani · Updated October 2026
Reiki is a complementary, non-medical relaxation practice that some people choose during pregnancy. It cannot establish what is medically safe for an individual pregnancy and does not replace prenatal care. Please consult your doctor or midwife before booking.

What a pregnancy session looks like
You stay fully clothed. Hands rest lightly on or just above the body, with no massage, pressure or manipulation. Your position can change whenever you need it to, and the session is adjusted around your comfort.
A distance session is also available if you prefer to rest at home at the agreed time.
Why the trimester matters
Comfort and positioning can change through pregnancy. The practical detail of booking in the first weeks lives on Reiki in the first trimester. For the second and third trimesters, see what a later-trimester session involves. The Pregnancy Reiki page has the booking overview.
What it is for
The session offers a quiet hour to rest. It does not treat symptoms or pregnancy complications, diagnose anything, or replace care from your midwife or doctor. Keep your usual prenatal appointments and tell your care team about complementary practices you are considering.
If your doctor or midwife says it is appropriate for you, get in touch to discuss the session format.
Related questions
Can I have Reiki in every trimester of pregnancy?
Only your doctor or midwife can advise what is appropriate for your individual pregnancy and trimester. Reiki here is a complementary, non-medical relaxation practice, not a safety assessment or substitute for prenatal care.
Will I need to lie flat on my back?
No. Side lying with pillows under the belly and knees is the usual position, particularly from the second trimester onward, and it can be changed at any point in the session if it stops feeling comfortable. Nothing is pressed or adjusted at any stage.
Does Reiki replace my prenatal care?
No. Reiki is not a treatment for any pregnancy complication and does not replace prenatal care. Keep your usual appointments and consult your doctor or midwife before booking.
