A hard workout or a Reiki session: which one does your body need?
By Vanessa Chugani · Updated September 2026
Choose the workout when your body is restless and wants to move, when you need to build strength or burn off energy. Choose Reiki when you are wired, exhausted or carrying stress a workout will not touch, when your jaw will not unclench or sleep will not come. Many people need both, on different days.
A hard workout and a Reiki session both leave you different than they found you, but they work through different doors. A workout asks something of your muscles: it raises your heart rate, works your body against resistance, and gives restless energy somewhere to go. A Reiki session asks nothing of your muscles at all. You lie down, fully clothed, and rest while your nervous system gets a chance to downshift. One is exertion. The other is rest and support, not a workout and not a treatment for anything specific. The real question is not which is better. It is what your body is asking for this week.
| A hard workout | A Reiki session | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | You move against resistance: weights, running, cycling, a class. Heart rate up, muscles worked directly, sweat. | You lie down, fully clothed, and rest while Reiki works with your nervous system rather than your muscles. |
| What it helps with | Building strength and stamina, working off restless energy, the mood lift that comes from hard physical effort. | Stress, exhaustion, overwhelm, grief and anxiety, and the physical tension that comes with them: a clenched jaw, shoulders up by your ears. |
| How you feel afterwards | Tired in a good way, muscles worked, often a genuine lift in mood once the effort is over. | People report calmer, sleep that finally comes, pain sitting further away, steadier in themselves, less alone with what they're carrying. |
| Best suited to | A body that's restless, wired with unused energy, or wanting to build strength and fitness over time. | A nervous system that has been running hot for a while: stressed, wrung out, or carrying grief or worry it hasn't put down. |
| Cost | Depends on the gym, studio or class you choose. Not something I can price for you here. | EUR 188 for a private session in Canggu, EUR 138 for distance. A three session package is EUR 388. |
| Time commitment | As long as your session or class runs, and it works best as an ongoing routine, not a one-off. | About an hour. Some people feel a shift after one session; others prefer a three or five session package. |
Which one suits you
If you've been sitting all day and your legs actually want to move, if you're restless rather than depleted, a hard workout is the better call, not a Reiki session. That's true for a lot of people some weeks, and I'd say so if you asked me. Reiki suits a different kind of tired: the one that shows up after weeks of stress, grief, a hard year, or a body that will not settle at night no matter how exhausted you are. It works with the nervous system rather than the muscles, so it's not a substitute for a hard workout and it won't build your strength. What it is for is the exhaustion that a workout can't touch: the jaw that won't unclench, the mind that won't stop, the sense of carrying more than you can put down. A session in Canggu is EUR 188; distance is EUR 138.

Is a Reiki session a replacement for exercise?
No. Reiki works with your nervous system, not your muscles, and it won't build strength or fitness. If your body wants to move, a workout is the right tool. Reiki is for the exhaustion or stress a workout doesn't reach, the kind that keeps you wired at night even after a hard session at the gym.
Can I do a hard workout and have a Reiki session in the same week?
Yes. They're not competing for the same job. A workout works the body directly, a Reiki session gives your nervous system a chance to rest. Some people do both regularly: a hard session earlier in the week, a Reiki session when things feel like too much.
Will a Reiki session help with soreness after a hard workout?
Muscle soreness from a hard workout is a mechanical thing, and massage is the better first call for that. Reiki is for the tension that comes from stress or exhaustion rather than exertion: a jaw that won't unclench, shoulders up by your ears, regardless of whether you've been to the gym that week.
