Reiki or a digital detox: which one suits you?
By Vanessa Chugani · Updated September 2026
Choose a Reiki session if you're stressed, exhausted or wired and want support without changing your week. Choose a digital detox or silent retreat if the scrolling and notifications are the problem itself and you have several days free. Many women use both at different times.
Both promise a way to feel less overwhelmed, but they work on different things. A Reiki session is an hour where you lie down and someone else does the work: your nervous system gets an hour of quiet support, and you go back to your day afterwards. A digital detox or silent retreat asks more of you. You give up your phone, often your voice, and your usual routine for days at a time, and what changes is your relationship with input itself: the checking, the scrolling, the constant low hum of notifications. One fits into a Tuesday afternoon. The other needs you to clear your calendar.

|---|---|---|
| What happens | One to one, lying down, fully clothed, in Canggu or by distance. You receive; nothing is required of you. | Days away from screens, often in silence, following a set daily structure with little conversation. |
| Time commitment | One hour a session, in person or distance, fitted around your week. | Usually several days away, sometimes a full week, away from ordinary life. |
| What it's for | A nervous system that has been running hot: stress, exhaustion, overwhelm, grief, anxiety, wired at 2am. | A habit of checking, scrolling and constant input that has become the problem itself. |
| What people report | Sleep that comes more easily, pain sitting further away, steadier in yourself, less alone with what you're carrying. | Distance from notifications and noise, and a clearer sense of what matters without them. |
| What's required of you | Nothing. You lie down and receive. | Giving up your phone, often your voice, and your usual routine for the length of the stay. |
| Best fit | Someone who needs support now and can return to ordinary life the same day. | Someone whose overwhelm comes from constant input and who has real time to step away. |
Which one suits you
If you're carrying stress, exhaustion, grief or anxiety and want something that meets you where you are, without asking you to change anything first, a Reiki session is built for that: you lie down, you receive, you go back to your day. It suits someone who needs support now, not a project. A digital detox or silent retreat suits a different problem. If the real issue is that you can't put your phone down, that notifications have taken over your attention, and you have several days you can actually clear, stepping away from screens and noise addresses that directly in a way an hour on a table cannot. Someone recovering from burnout with two weeks free, or a compulsive checker who needs the phone physically gone, is better served there. Reiki is for the nervous system that needs support this week, not the calendar that needs clearing.

Can I do both?
Yes. Many women use a Reiki session to get through an ordinary stressful week, and go on a digital detox or silent retreat when they need a longer reset from screens and noise. The two solve different problems, and using one doesn't rule out the other.
Does Reiki help with phone addiction or screen habits?
Not directly. Reiki works with the nervous system, so it can help with the stress and overwhelm that often sit underneath compulsive scrolling, but it doesn't change the habit itself or take the phone out of your hand. A digital detox tackles that behaviour directly, by removing the device.
