Why I Don't Re-Attune Students Who've Already Completed a Level

Every few months a student who finished Level 1 or Level 2 with me asks to come back and repeat the attunement. The idea, as it's usually put to me, is that doing it again adds something: it doubles the connection, or deepens what the first one started. I don't offer that. I want to explain why, because the honest answer says more about how this training actually works than the request does.
What people expect it to do
The claim I hear most is that an attunement works like a dose: the more times you receive it, the stronger it gets. That's an understandable way to think about it if you're used to courses that build through repetition, or supplements you take again the next day for a bigger effect. Some students ask because they felt very little during their first attunement and worry it didn't take. Others have simply read online that more is always better. Neither is how this training is structured, and it isn't how I was taught to pass it on. An attunement belongs to a level. It happens once, as part of finishing that level, and then it's done.
Where the idea of repeating it comes from
I teach one lineage, Usui Reiki Ryoho, and I claim no other. Repeating an attunement for a boost isn't part of that lineage as it was handed to me. It's a habit that grew up around Reiki later, alongside other add-ons that sound plausible but were never in the original training. I've written more about where the practice actually comes from, and where the popular story and the record disagree, in where Usui Reiki actually comes from. The honest history is usually less dramatic than the myth, and more useful too.
Why I say no
I decline for a plain reason: there is nothing for a second attunement at the same level to add. You've either completed Level 1 or you haven't. A student who has already been through it carries what that level gives. Going through the ceremony again doesn't put more of it in, because it was never a dose to begin with. I teach in small groups, never more than six, often one to one, and every attunement I give is live: never a recording, never anything automated. That's deliberate. Each one is a moment I'm present for, not something I can resend, and handing it out a second time for the same level would just be theatre with no training behind it.
What actually helps a student go deeper
What deepens a student's practice is practice. Put your hands on yourself daily. Work on friends and family when they'll let you, and on anyone who asks once you're confident enough. Sit with people for longer than feels comfortable and notice what you feel, and what you don't. Keep a short note after each session on what you noticed, even if it's only a line.
Feeling little or nothing during your original attunement is normal, and it has no bearing on how well you go on to practise. The skill builds from hours spent with your hands on someone, not from repeating the afternoon you were taught. If you want to revisit what that day involved, I've written about preparing for an attunement, and it holds up just as well as a reminder for someone who has already been through one.
If you're ready for more
If a student has genuinely outgrown Level 1, the honest next step is Level 2, not a second pass at Level 1. That's a real progression: new material, and a new attunement that actually adds something. You can see how the levels are laid out from here through to Master Teacher. And if what you want isn't more study but a chance to talk through where you've got stuck, book a private session with me and we'll work through it hands on, in the room.
