What I Watch For In A Woman's Shoulders Before She Says Anything

What I Watch For In A Woman's Shoulders Before She Says Anything

A woman lies down for a session and tells me she is fine. Her shoulders say otherwise. They sit high, tight against her neck, and her breath stays caught in her chest instead of dropping into her stomach. That is the first thing I read, long before any of it turns into a sentence she is ready to say out loud.

What I watch for

Every body carries its recent history close to the surface, and for a lot of the women I see in Canggu, a good deal of it sits in the shoulders. Before I place a hand anywhere, I watch the set of the jaw, the rise and fall of the chest, and the distance between an ear and a shoulder that has forgotten it is allowed to drop. A jaw held tight without anyone asking it to. A stomach that grips instead of releasing. Ribs that barely move because the breath never gets past the top few inches of the chest.

None of this needs pointing out to be true, and none of it is dramatic. It is visible within the first few minutes, before a hand is resting on skin.

  • The shoulders lower, sometimes by an inch, sometimes barely visible, and they stay there.
  • The breath slows and drops, moving from the chest down into the stomach.

Nobody gasps or bursts into tears the moment it happens, though some do, later, and that is fine too. It is quieter than that. A woman who has been holding her whole upper body like a coat hanger for months finally puts the coat down, and her body knows before she does.

Before anyone says it out loud

What I notice, again and again, is the gap between what the body does and what a person is ready to say. A woman will lie there with her shoulders dropped and her breathing slow and even, looking for all the world like someone who has just exhaled properly for the first time in weeks, and then afterwards tell me she is not sure this was necessary. That she is managing fine. That she mostly came out of curiosity.

I do not argue with that. The shoulders already made their case. Most people who tend to come to a first session are carrying more than they are willing to name yet, and the body is usually more honest than the sentence that follows it.

Why the tension sits there

The shoulders are an easy place to carry stress because they are always on duty, braced, half ready for the next thing, and they stay tight long after whatever caused the tightness has passed. Grief does this. So does exhaustion, and the particular kind of overwhelm that comes from running a household, a career or the end of a marriage all at once. None of it is a mechanical injury. It is a nervous system that has not had a reason to stand down in a long while, and the shoulders are usually where that shows first.

This is not a diagnosis and it is not medical care. It is rest and support for a body that has been working too hard for too long, and I say that plainly because I would rather a woman know exactly what she is getting than arrive with the wrong idea of it. If what is going on is a specific injury or a mechanical problem in the joint itself, a massage therapist is the better first call, and I will say so if that is what I am looking at.

What tends to happen next

By the end of a session, most women notice the shift themselves, even if they do not call it by name straight away. Sleep that finally comes properly that night. A jaw that unclenches without being told to. The sense of carrying something slightly lighter on the walk home. I hear about these things afterwards, sometimes days afterwards, more often than I hear the words "I needed that" while we are still in the room.

That delay does not bother me. It is not my job to make someone say the sentence out loud. It is my job to notice what the shoulders are already telling me and give the rest of her the time to catch up. If any of this sounds familiar, a private session is the place to start, and there is no requirement to arrive certain about why you are there.
