Who Actually Shows Up to My Reiki Trainings

If you picture my Reiki training room as a cosy circle of especially sensitive souls who already speak in chakras and moon cycles, you are not alone. That image is everywhere online. It is also not what usually fills the chairs.

Most of the women who train with me are ordinary in the best sense. They have careers behind them, families, mortgages, inboxes that never quite empty. They are not trying to become a new person. They want something practical they can use when stress has been running hot for too long, when sleep is thin, when grief or anxiety sits in the body as tension they cannot talk their way out of.

Many arrive sceptical. They have read enough wellness copy to be wary of promises. They ask straight questions about what an attunement is, what they will actually do with their hands, and whether they need to feel anything dramatic on day one. I would rather that than romantic expectations. Usui Shiki Ryoho is a craft I teach in small groups, often one to one, live in Canggu or live online, never from a recording.

Not the sensitive stereotype

The stereotype says Reiki training is for people who already identify as intuitive, empathic, or spiritual. Some students fit that description, and they are welcome. They are not the majority.

More often, the person booking Level 1 is a woman in her forties or fifties at a turning point. Children grown, marriage ended, career shifted, a parent lost. She is competent. She has done hard things. She does not need a fantasy version of herself to walk through the door.

She might say she is not the type for this sort of thing. She might apologise for not meditating, or for rolling her eyes at crystal shops. I tell her the room is built for her anyway. Reiki here is rest and support for a nervous system that has been on alert. It is not a treatment for any medical condition, it does not diagnose anything, and it is not a substitute for medical care. Once that is clear, we get on with what she came for: learning to work with her own hands, steadily, without performance.

What they are really looking for

People do not usually book training because they want a weekend of relaxation. They want a second act that feels credible. They want to offer something to family, friends, or clients that is grounded, not theatrical.

Training is Level 1 through Master Teacher. Each level is EUR 488, the same in person or live online. Groups stay at six or fewer. You get the manual, the attunement, and support after. I teach the Reiki symbols from Level 1 onward, not as a mystery reserved for later. Level 2 builds on that foundation and adds distance work. Dates are arranged around you; there is no fixed calendar on the website because adult lives do not fit one.

Students often notice the same things people report after sessions: the body finally settling at night, shoulders dropping, a jaw unclenching, appetite returning, mood steadier. I describe that as what people report, not as a promise. Feeling nothing during an attunement is normal too, and worth saying out loud so nobody thinks they failed.

If you want the wider picture of what training involves, the Reiki training page lays out the levels plainly. If you are weighing whether you need sessions first or you are ready to learn, when people tend to come might help you sort your own timing.

Why scepticism fits the room

I do not ask anyone to adopt a belief system. I do not use crystals in Usui Shiki Ryoho training. When I teach the chakra system, I say openly that it is a twentieth-century synthesis attached to Western Reiki in the 1980s, useful vocabulary, not ancient history. The lineage I claim is simple: Hawayo Takata, Chujiro Hayashi, Mikao Usui. That is the line I was trained in, and it is the only one I teach.

I also decline to explain Reiki with quantum physics or energy fields measured in hertz. I do not call it scientifically proven. If research comes up, I stick to what reviews actually say: for example, a 2025 review of eleven trials noted significant improvement in quality of life among participants. A 2019 study of reported outcomes across many sessions described improvements in pain, tiredness, mood and wellbeing without a control group, so it shows what people said, not what Reiki caused. That honesty tends to land better with a forty-five-year-old professional than hype ever does.

If you are wondering whether you belong

You belong if you want to learn a hands-on practice for stress, exhaustion, overwhelm, grief and anxiety, including the physical tension that rides on top of those states. Massage is still the better first call for an injury or a purely mechanical problem, and I am happy to say so. Reiki is what I teach when the body will not settle because life has been too much for too long.

You do not need to look mystical, sound mystical, or feel mystical on day one. You need to show up willing to learn, in English or German, in a small room in Canggu or at your kitchen table online. The women who stay are often the ones who thought they were the wrong type. They were exactly the type the training was made for.

When you are ready to talk dates or level, get in touch. Accurate expectations beat romantic ones every time.
