The Loneliest Clients I See in Canggu Aren't Who You'd Expect

The loneliest people I see in my practice are rarely the ones who look lonely. They have the villa with the plunge pool, the laptop open on a cafe table by nine in the morning, the sunset photo that collects likes before lunch. She has usually told everyone back home that she has never been happier, and in a strange way, that part is not even untrue. From the outside, a life in Canggu looks like something other people would trade for. On the table, in a quiet room with nobody watching, something else is often true.
What it actually looks like
It rarely announces itself as loneliness. It shows up as a body that will not settle, or a jaw that stays tight through a session meant to loosen it. Other times it is simply someone who has not had an unhurried conversation in longer than she wants to admit, the kind where nobody is checking the time or waiting for their turn to talk. People often arrive here mid reset, having left behind a career or a marriage that ended, with a stretch of time carved out to work out what comes next. The reset is working in some ways. The quiet underneath it is real too, and it rarely gets mentioned in the group chat.
Why it hides so well here
Canggu rewards a particular kind of performance. Everyone is between flights, between versions of themselves, which makes it easy to collect a hundred friendly faces and still have nobody who has known you longer than a season. A person can be active in a dozen group chats and show up to a beach club most weekends, and still go home to a rented room where nobody actually knows what kind of week she is having. The photos do not help. A good light and a nice view make solitude look like choice, even on the days it is not.
That gap, between what a life looks like from a lounger and what it feels like from inside it, is the thing I notice most often. It rarely looks dramatic. This is not only a digital nomad problem. I am not describing a type of person so much as a set of conditions: constant arrivals and departures, and friendships that reset just as they start to matter. A life built around freedom turns out to need more structure underneath it than anyone advertised. Midlife makes it sharper, not softer. Someone who left a career or a marriage behind to come here is often also leaving behind the people who knew her before any of that happened, and rebuilding that in a transient town often takes longer than most people expect.
What I can actually offer
Reiki does not fix loneliness, and I would not tell anyone that it does. It is rest and support for a nervous system that has been running hot for a long time, often for reasons that have nothing to do with Bali at all. A 2025 review of eleven randomised trials found a significant improvement in quality of life, with the best results coming after several longer sessions rather than one. That tracks with what I see here. This is rarely a single fix. It is support that adds up.
What people report afterwards is not usually "I feel less alone", in those words. It is sleep that finally comes properly, and a body that stops bracing for the next thing. Underneath that, though, is something simpler: an hour of lying still while someone pays real attention to how she actually is, not to how her week looks from the outside. It is an hour where nothing needs performing, which for some people here turns out to be rarer than it should be.
If this sounds familiar
I am not trying to put a diagnosis on anyone reading this. Loneliness in a beautiful place is not a condition with a name, and most people carrying it would not use that word for what they are feeling. It is simply a pattern I see often enough in this room to say it plainly. If some part of this sounds like your own life, the one that photographs better than it feels on certain weeks, it might be worth asking what you actually need before you book anything: company, rest, or both at once. Here is what tends to bring people in for a first session, and if loneliness is part of what you are carrying, that article may help you decide whether a first session makes sense.
