Crystals and Reiki: What's Traditional and What Isn't
August 2026 · 3 min read · By Vanessa Chugani

Walk into most Reiki rooms in Bali and you will see crystals. Walk into a Japanese Reiki lineage and you will not. Both of those things can be fine, but they should not be confused with each other, and a lot of teaching quietly does.
The straightforward part
Crystals are not part of Usui Reiki Ryoho. Usui did not use them, Hayashi did not use them, Takata did not use them. They arrived in Western Reiki rooms along with everything else the 1980s brought, including the chakra system.
So if a course sells you a crystal grid as traditional Reiki, that is not right. It might still be worth doing. It is just not traditional.
What I will not claim
I am not going to tell you that a stone amplifies energy, holds a frequency, or programs itself to an intention. I have no way of knowing any of that, and neither does anyone selling it to you.
I am also not going to tell you they are worthless, because that would not match what I see.
What I actually think they do
Three things, none of them mysterious.
- Weight. A stone on the chest or in the hand is physical, and something to feel is genuinely useful for people whose attention will not settle. A smooth heavy object gives the nervous system something ordinary to land on.
- Ritual. Choosing a stone, putting it somewhere, picking it up at the end. Ritual marks a boundary around time. That is not nothing. It is most of what makes an hour feel different from the rest of the day.
- A reminder. A stone in a pocket is a small object that means "the thing you decided on Tuesday". People forget intentions. Objects are good at remembering them.
All three of those are real and none of them require the stone to be doing anything on its own.
If you want to use them anyway
Then use them, and use them lightly. A few practical notes.
- Buy what you like the look and feel of. That is a better selection method than a properties chart, and more honest.
- Do not spend a lot. The price of a stone tells you about the market, not the stone.
- Be aware that some crystal mining causes real environmental and human harm, and the supply chain is largely untraceable. If that matters to you, buy less and ask more.
- Do not let a stone become a condition of your practice. If you cannot do Reiki without your kit, the kit has become the point.
The thing worth being careful about
Crystals get sold hardest to people who are frightened, and there is a real difference between a stone that helps you settle and a stone offered as an alternative to treatment. Nothing here treats an illness. If you are unwell, see a doctor, and bring the stone with you if you want to.
In my Level 1 training we do not use crystals. We use hands, because that is what the practice is. What you add afterwards is up to you.
