The Healing Scene in Canggu: An Honest Orientation

August 2026 · 4 min read · By Vanessa Chugani

This is not a list of my favourite places. Canggu turns over so fast that any such list is wrong within a year, and most of the guides you will find are recommending cafes that closed years ago. This is how the area works instead.

Last checked: August 2026.

The areas, briefly

  • Batu Bolong. The busiest strip, and where most of the yoga studios are. Walkable, loud, and where most people stay on a first visit.
  • Berawa. Newer, glossier, more beach clubs and gyms than healing rooms.
  • Pererenan. Quieter, north west, and where a lot of the scene has drifted as Batu Bolong filled up. Better if you want to actually sleep.
  • Ubud, an hour inland. Worth being honest: Ubud, not Canggu, is the centre of gravity for healing in Bali. There is far more of it there, and far more of everything, including nonsense. Canggu is smaller and quieter for this.

How the scene actually works

Almost none of it is bookable the way you would book a restaurant. Practitioners here work out of their homes, out of borrowed rooms, out of studios they rent by the hour. Most of the good ones are found through recommendation and reached on WhatsApp. There is no directory worth trusting, and the businesses that rank well on Google are frequently the ones spending on marketing rather than the ones doing the best work.

A practical consequence: expect to message a person, not a booking system, and expect a reply in hours rather than seconds. That is normal here and is not a sign of unprofessionalism.

What things cost

Prices are usually quoted in rupiah locally and in euros or dollars to visitors, and the gap between the two can be large. As a rough orientation in 2026: a good local massage runs a few hundred thousand rupiah, a drop in yoga class somewhat less, and one to one healing work of any kind, Reiki included, is priced in a different bracket again because it is an hour of one person's undivided attention rather than a group class.

My own prices are on the sessions page rather than buried in an enquiry form, which I would gently suggest is a reasonable thing to expect from anyone.

Yoga studios

The established ones in and around Batu Bolong include The Practice, which leans traditional and lineage based, and Samadi, which runs classes and a well known Sunday market. Both have been here a long time by Canggu standards, which is its own recommendation.

I am deliberately not listing every studio and healing room in the area. Some of them are lovely. Some of them opened last month. And a fair number offer Reiki themselves, which makes me the wrong person to be ranking them.

Food, without the graveyard

Worth knowing before you follow any older guide: of the cafes most frequently recommended in Canggu wellness articles, several have closed, one has moved area entirely, and at least one abandoned domain now redirects to a gambling site. Check before you travel across town.

Places that were open and operating when I last checked: The Shady Shack on Jalan Tanah Barak, Crate Cafe which is now in Pererenan rather than its old location, KYND Community on Jalan Nelayan, ZIN on Jalan Nelayan, and The Avocado Factory out at Echo Beach. Several of these are commonly listed in the wrong area, which is how people end up on the wrong side of Canggu at rush hour.

A word about balians

A balian is a Balinese traditional healer working inside a living religious tradition. It is not a wellness experience and it is not really for casual curiosity. If you want to see one, go with a Balinese person who knows them, dress respectfully, bring an offering, and go because you want help. There is more on how balian work differs from Reiki, massage and sound healing if you are trying to work out what you actually want.

How to choose someone

  1. Ask who trained them and when. Anyone good will answer immediately.
  2. Be wary of anyone promising to fix a diagnosed medical condition. Ask what they will not treat.
  3. Prices should be stated before you arrive.
  4. Recommendations from people who live here beat anything you will find in a listicle, including this one.

I work from Canggu and you can find what I offer on the Canggu page, or just write to me.
