What if I feel nothing during a Reiki session?

Answered by Vanessa Chugani · Updated August 2026

Feeling nothing is common and it does not mean the session failed. Some people feel warmth, tingling or a heavy calm. Others feel nothing at all and still leave more rested than when they arrived. Both are normal. What matters is the hour of rest, not a particular sensation.

This is one of the most common questions people ask before a first session. Some people feel heat under my hands. Some feel a light pressure, or notice their breathing slow without trying. Some fall properly asleep for part of the hour. And some feel none of that, and are certain afterwards that nothing happened. All of it is normal, and none of it tells you whether the session did what it was there to do.

There is no one way to feel it

People often arrive with an idea of what a session is supposed to feel like: tingling hands, waves of warmth, a clear signal that something is moving. That happens for some people. It isn't the measure of anything. I have had sessions where someone described vivid heat moving through their chest, and sessions where someone said honestly, "I didn't feel a thing," and both left calmer than they arrived. Your body doesn't need to perform for you, and there is nothing to get right. The same range shows up in person in Canggu and in a distance session alike: strong sensation for some, nothing noticeable for others, with no link between which one and how the week after actually goes.

What the hour is actually doing

A session here is an hour where nothing is asked of you. No talking unless you want to, no effort, nowhere to be. If you arrive stressed, wired, exhausted or carrying more than you can put down, that hour of being left alone with permission to rest does something, whether or not you can point to a sensation while it's happening. Most people notice it afterwards, in how the evening goes or how they sleep that night, more than during the session itself. It's worth saying plainly: this is rest and support, not a treatment for any medical condition, and it doesn't diagnose anything. It doesn't need to be more than that.

If you expected something stronger

If you're used to a strong physical experience, like the pressure and release of a good massage, a session here can feel quiet by comparison. That isn't a lesser experience, it's a different kind of work. If what you need is hands-on pressure for a tight muscle or an old injury, massage is the better first call. If what you're carrying is stress, exhaustion, grief or a mind that will not switch off at night, a quiet hour where you feel very little beyond a slow settling is often exactly right.

Who this tends to suit

People book a private session after a stretch that has worn them down: a big transition, a loss, months of running on empty, more anxiety at 2am than they would like to admit. If that sounds familiar, this is when people tend to come. You do not need to feel a particular way in the room. You only need to show up and let the hour be what it is.

Does feeling nothing during a Reiki session mean it did not work?

No. Some people feel warmth, tingling or a heavy calm, and some feel nothing at all. Neither response tells you anything about the hour. What the session is offering is rest, an hour where nothing is asked of you, and that happens whether or not you notice a particular sensation while it's happening.

What do most people feel during a session?

It varies. Some feel heat or a light pressure under my hands, some feel their breathing slow, some fall asleep for part of the hour, and some feel very little. All of these are ordinary. There is no sensation you are supposed to have, in person in Canggu or in a distance session.

Should I try to relax or make myself feel something during the session?

No. There is nothing to do and nothing to perform. You can lie there, breathe, fall asleep or stay wide awake and alert, and any of that is fine. The hour is doing its work regardless of what you notice, so the only thing worth aiming for is letting yourself be still.
