Is Reiki training worth it if I do not want clients?
Answered by Vanessa Chugani · Updated August 2026
Yes. Most people who train with Vanessa never take on a client. Level 1 teaches you to work on yourself, and often on family, whenever you need it, before sleep, after a hard day, through a difficult stretch. The training holds up on its own, as a skill for your own life, not only as the start of a practice.
Some people train in Reiki because they want to build a practice around it eventually. Just as many train because they want a skill that is theirs, something to use on themselves, on their children, on a partner having a rough week. Neither reason needs the other. Level 1 is complete on its own, and nothing about the training assumes you are heading toward clients.
What Level 1 actually gives you
Level 1 is where you learn to work on yourself. You get the attunement, the hand positions and the manual, and you leave able to sit down and do a self-treatment whenever you want one, before bed when your mind will not settle, or after a day that has taken more out of you than it should have. Vanessa teaches this level, and every level after it, live, in Canggu or live online, in groups of no more than six and often one to one. There is no recording and no automated attunement at any point.
Working on people close to you
Level 1 does not restrict you to yourself. Plenty of students use it on a partner after a hard week, or on a child who cannot get to sleep. None of this requires a client relationship, a treatment room or any intention to charge for what you do. It is closer to a skill you keep in the house, the way some people keep a first aid course current without ever expecting to use it professionally.
Why people stop at one level
A lot of students take Level 1 and never go further, and that is not a failure to finish something. Some want a tool for their own stress and nothing more. Some want to use it on a partner or a child and stop there. Others come back a year later for Level 2, once they know the first level was useful to them, rather than out of any plan to build toward a qualification.
If you are weighing this up, the honest question is not whether you want clients. It is whether you want a skill you can reach for on your own, on your own schedule, without booking a session with anyone. If the answer is yes, the training earns its place on that basis alone.
What changes if you never see a client
Nothing about the course changes. Level 1 to Master Teacher is EUR 488 per level, whether you plan to practise on your family or eventually teach. Dates are arranged around you rather than set to a fixed calendar, so there is no pressure to fit a course you are taking for yourself into somebody else's schedule. If a client practice interests you later, the training still gets you there. If it never does, you still walk away with a self-treatment you can use for the rest of your life.
This suits someone who wants a working tool for their own life, not a rehearsal for a business. It suits less well someone whose only reason for training is the certificate itself, with no plan to ever use what is on it.

Do I need to want clients before I sign up for training?
No. Most students who train with Vanessa never take on a client. Level 1 is built to teach you a self-treatment you can use whenever you need it, and nothing in the course assumes you are working toward a practice.
Is it normal to stop after Level 1?
Yes. Many students take Level 1, use it on themselves or their family, and never continue. That is a complete outcome, not an unfinished one. Others come back for Level 2 a year or more later, once they know the first level suited them.
Can I only use Reiki on family, not on strangers?
Yes. Level 1 teaches hand positions and a self-treatment you can also use on a partner, a child or a parent. None of it requires a client relationship, a treatment room, or any plan to charge for what you do.
