Is it okay if I try Reiki and it just turns out not to be for me?

Answered by Vanessa Chugani · Updated September 2026

Yes, completely. Reiki suits some people and not others, and there is no way to know which you are until you try it. Book one session before anything else. If it helps, you can build from there. If it does not, you have lost an hour, not a commitment, and you are still welcome to ask questions.

It is more than okay. Most people who come to see me are not sure Reiki is for them, and that is exactly the right place to start from. You cannot read your way into knowing how a session feels on your own body. The only way to find out is to book one and pay attention to what happens afterwards, not just during it.

Start with one session, not a decision

A single private Reiki session in Canggu is EUR 188, or EUR 138 if you would rather do it as a distance session from wherever you are. Neither commits you to anything else. I do not sell a package on the first session and I will not ask you to. If one hour tells you this is not for you, you will know that honestly, and you have not signed up for five more.

Why it can be worth trying even if you are skeptical

A 2022 review of fourteen randomised placebo-controlled trials rated the evidence for Reiki high for stress and depression, and moderate to high for anxiety, in people who were genuinely struggling rather than already fine. That does not make it medicine, and it is not a treatment for any condition. What people usually tell me afterwards is more ordinary than dramatic: sleep that comes easier, and a jaw that finally unclenches. None of that is guaranteed, and I would rather you judge it from one real session than from anything written here, including this page.

What "not for me" usually looks like

Some people lie down expecting to feel something dramatic and instead feel very little, just quiet and a bit looser in the shoulders. That is normal and it is not the session failing. Others genuinely do not settle: lying still for an hour is not for everyone, and some people would rather have their body worked on directly. If what you are carrying is an injury or a purely mechanical knot, a good massage therapist is honestly the better first call, and I will say so if you ask me.

You will not be talked out of leaving

If you come once and decide it is not for you, that is a complete and useful answer, not a failed attempt. I would rather you leave with an accurate sense of whether this suits you than come back out of politeness. The same goes if you are curious about training later: it is a bigger step than a single session, and it makes far more sense once you already know what a session feels like from the inside.

  • Read when people tend to come for a sense of who actually finds it useful.
  • Come in without expecting a specific outcome, since curiosity is reason enough.

Either way, you will know after that one hour whether Reiki is for you, which is more than this page can tell you.

What if I feel nothing during the session?

Feeling little or nothing during a session is common and it does not mean the session failed. Most people notice something more ordinary: heavier limbs, or just quiet, rather than anything dramatic. If you want more to go on before you decide, one session tells you far more than reading ever will.

Do I need to book a package to try it?

No. A single session in person or by distance is the honest way to start, and it does not commit you to anything further. Packages exist for people who already know Reiki helps and want to keep going, not as a requirement for a first visit.

What if I try it and I am just not the type for stillness?

Then Reiki probably is not the right fit, and that is a fine outcome. Some people need to move or have their body worked on directly rather than lie still, and a massage therapist is often the better first call for that.
